Step Out Youth Group
South Wigston

Step Out Youth Group is based in South Wigston in the borough of Oadby and Wigson near Leicester. The group is operated by fully trained volunteers, and can offer a wide range of activities.  The youth group is affiliated to Young Leicestershire, Putting Young People First in Leicestershire. Step Out Youth Group was opened in South Wigston in 2016 as there was a need for somewhere for young people to meet, have fun, learn and build new skills.

Step Out Youth Group was created by Aimee Hill & Carl Walter with a great bunch of loyal volunteers. The youth group has an active committee that meets regularly to discuss and plan activities. The group was kindly supported & funded by The Conservation Volunteers Projects & The Health Lottery for the first six months. Since then we have grown in numbers, moved premises and been supported by a number of charities and organisations to be able to carry on supplying a service to the youth of South Wigston and further afield.

Step Out offer a large range of sports, either inside or out. Like stress dance, dodge ball. Snooker, boxercise, rounders, just to name a few. During the warmer weather we plan to attend putside sports centres like archery etc. We are very lucky to also own a lot of our equipment like kick boxing equipment and our large air track and gymnastics mats so we can offer a wider range of gymnastic activities.

stepout youth trips and events

Trips  & Events

Each year we plan a number of day trips away from the youth group. This gives the children a chance to enjoy being away plus working as a team-building and learning new skills. The youth group also takes part in a number of events in Leicestershire, either to advertise our youth group and what we offer the youth. We also use these events to raise funds. Step Out Youth Group also help and attend community events and offer their services, like helping at the Christmas dinner for the over 60’s.

Step Out Youth Group is for young people. It’s based in South Wigston, which is an area of social deprivation, in the borough of Oadby & Wigston. South Wigston is among one of the most disadvantaged areas in Leicester. The area suffers from anti-social behavior and there is a lack of opportunities for young people to use their recreational time constructively.

Step Out Youth Club aims to offer opportunities to engage young people and encourage them to achieve their maximum potential in their personal and social development. The group was opened in 2016. Step Out welcomes anyone to their Elliott Hall Community and Youth premises from the ages of 8 to 16 years of age. The group is a voluntary sector, the youth group relies on grants and funding pots as well as donations from the trust to continue to run their sessions.

The group is made up of a management committee, part-time youth workers and volunteers. Step Out Youth Group moved in November 2017 to their new base at Elliott Hall, South Wigston, Leicester.

This gave them the chance to offer a larger range of activities for all ages. This includes different crafts, cooking, growing in our community garden, hands-on making, plus indoor and outdoor sports (mainly in the summer on the park for outdoors).

A large computer chill zone and soon laptops will be available for homework and research. There is also a fully-stocked tuck shop. Indoor activities range from snooker, air hockey, table football, table tennis, badminton, bowling, volleyball, darts, and lots more!!!!

Throughout the year different sports activities are available for periods of four to six weeks at no extra charge such as boxercise, gymnastics, street dance, to name just a few. Step Out also endeavors to plan evenings/day trips for the group ranging from swimming and skating to a full fun day where the whole family can attend.
